Student Advisory Committee Suggestions
Ideas brought up at the most recent meeting on February 8, 2000
I. Opening Ceremony
A. Have three students with personal stories speak on how gangs, intolerance, or drugs have affected their lives.
B. Service Awardsjazzier and possibly hosted by youth.
Service Small Group Discussion
A room for each topic.
Small student facilitated groups, with all schools represented in each group.
Report out to larger group; discuss service project, all angles.
Discussion and Q&A on topics
Talk with local experts from city and suburbs
Suggestions: Luis Rogriguez, author of Always Running, a memoir of his Los Angelos gang experiences written for his son who became involved in street life. Also the possibility of having a former gang member, as well as a school counselor from Senn who dealt with issues of racial intolerance. Also a former gang member was suggested.
Teleconference
Students speak with Senators as well as politicians at state and local levels.
provide opportunity for as many students to talk as possible.
Community service organizations, people in community who are attempting to solve thse problems, as well as school counselors who have confronted these problems.
Other suggestions:
To create a service project booklet, to be created by students from the Student Advisory Committee, containing a description of each school's service project.
