2010 CRFC Summer Institutes


MOCK TRIAL INSTITUTE—SUMMER 2010

AN INSTITUTE FOR 7TH AND 8TH GRADE TEACHERS INTERESTED IN CONDUCTING MOCK TRIALS IN THE CLASSROOM

The Mock Trial Institute will provide 7th and 8th grade teachers with materials and strategies to effectively carry out a mock trial in the classroom. Session highlights include the implementation of State v Bean, an award winning interactive mock trial DVD created to give students the experience of serving on a jury. A brand new mock trial created to help students learn about our criminal court system in a dynamic and engaging way will be featured. Attendees receive 6 CPDUs.

Institute will take place at a downtown Chicago law firm and lunch will be provided.

A PROGRAM FOR 7TH AND 8TH GRADE TEACHERS WHO ADMINISTER THE U.S. CONSTITUTION TEST

More Perfect Union is a curriculum created for teachers who administer the U.S. Constitution Test to their 7th or 8th grade students. The activities provided in this curriculum help prepare for the Constitution Test and will deepen and reinforce students’ knowledge of our system of government. The dynamic lessons and strategies will show students how the Constitution applies to their lives and help them gain the skills and attitudes necessary to become active and engaged citizens. The curriculum contains extended response questions and a bank of alternative assessments. Attendees receive 12 CPDUs.

Teachers attending the 2-day More Perfect Union Summer Institute will be eligible to receive an attorney partner as part of the Edward J. Lewis II Lawyers in the Classroom Program.

2010 SUPREME COURT UPDATE SUMMER INSTITUTE

SCU August 4-5, 2010
Chicago, Illinois

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The 2010 Supreme Court Update is designed to promote a greater understanding of the Supreme Court of the United States and its roles in American government. This two-day institute will feature two decisions from the Court’s October 2009 Term (2009-2010). Participants will meet with legal scholars, former U.S. Supreme Court clerks, and other experts to review and discuss the implications of the focus cases. Participants also will receive resources about the issues, the Court, and the decisions along with classroom-ready materials. The Supreme Court Update will be held in downtown Chicago. CRFC will reimburse lodging and travel expenses up to $200 for Illinois participants outside the Metropolitan Chicago area. Call Dee Runaas for hotel discount information.

NOTE: One of the featured decisions will be the focus of the 2010 Equal Justice Under Law fall semester program. Participation in the Supreme Court Update institute is not required to participate in Equal Justice Under Law.

FEATURES AND HIGHLIGHTS

INSTITUTE SITE
The Institute will take place at the offices of the Illinois Supreme Court, 160 North LaSalle Street, in downtown Chicago. Participants will receive curriculum materials, continental breakfast, and lunch.
