PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Educating for Democracy features the following programs currently offered by CRFC for CPS teachers and students in the primary, upper elementary, and middle school grades:

- Primary VOICE: Literature and the Law combines reading and law-related education for second and third grade students. An outgrowth of CRFC’s successful VOICE program, Primary VOICE is designed to enhance reading comprehension and citizen competencies of students using children’s literature and LRE issues and methods. Field-tested in CPS and U-46 in the 2000-2001 school year, the completed program will be expanded in 2001-2002.

- VOICE (Violence-Prevention Outcomes In Civic Education) is an innovative, year-long elementary social studies program designed to increase academic achievement, foster peaceful resolution of conflict, and spark community service. Introduced in 1995, VOICE helps fourth through sixth graders learn about how our government works and about their roles as citizens.

- Law in My Life, CRFC’s longest-running elementary school program, helps seventh and eighth graders understand the importance of law in their own lives. Students develop specific knowledge of how the American legal, political, and governmental systems function as well as positive attitudes about their roles as citizens. The program features
historical mock trials, working with attorney volunteers, and participating in Project Citizen.
