
Educating for Democracy is a professional development initiative created by the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago that focuses on civic education and is designed to improve the quality, content, and process of teaching and learning for the critical elementary years.
The initiative provides long-term faculty support and program continuity through the creation of learning teams of teachers within schools and the implementation of grade-appropriate civic education curricula and methodologies. It features formal training, classroom coaching, and a foundation for sustained discussion, reflection, and assessment of classroom practice.
Launched in 2000, Educating for Democracy is now underway in both the Chicago Public Schools and Illinois District U-46, which is centered in Elgin. For more information, contact CRFC at
