Summary
The
Democracy Education Exchange Program's Summer Institute
for U.S. teachers was designed for several purposes.
-
To give teachers participating in the DEEP program an opportunity to teach each
other about the countries they are partnered with;
-
To provide a workshop in which educators can explore the possibilities of
international online collaborative projects by simulating a pilot project; and
-
To identify resources available in teaching about civics in these emerging
democracies.
The DEEP Institute focused on civic education strategies, teaching about
controversial issues, and strategies for service learning. In addition, a
computer workshop was held to give teachers an introduction to CRFC iEARN
Forums and to identify available resources. (For details, see agenda.)
At the end of the Institute, teachers split into small groups and developed
lesson plans incorporating the strategies and resources they had identified
during the DEEP program.
