Union Juror Profiles

The names and backgrounds of the individual jurors are fictitious. The intent was to create a jury that would foster discussion and help gain understanding of a Jury of Your Peers. This jury is made up of Union Veterans and private citizens from Pennsylvania.

Juror #1

Josephus Broughton, Union Officer from Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, Age: 36, Race: Caucasian

Lt. Broughton is a career military man who has served with the Union forces since he was 18. His family is from Harrisburg and his brother is a vocal abolitionist. He feels a deep commitment to the Union and its sovereign power over the states.

Juror #2

Steven Moore, Union Veteran/Mill Worker from York, Pennsylvania, Age: 23, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Moore enlisted with the Union forces to join the adventure of battle. He has vivid and horrid memories of the war and now works in York at a mill. He is opposed to the use of slave labor because he sees it as a way for wealthy landowners to make money without acknowledging those who helped them make profits.

Timothy Filhart, Union Soldier/Farmer from Blain, Pennsylvania, Age: 34, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Filhart was raised on a small family farm and currently serves in the Union Army. He is on medical leave after receiving a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He feels strongly that the Union must reign in the unsavory labor practices of the South. His farm is family run and makes a modest profit. He feels the South should abide by the same principles.

Vann Taylor, Union Veteran/Metalsmith from Reading, Pennsylvania, Age: 26, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Taylor served in the Union Army as a livery assistant and helped shoe horses. He is now a metalsmith in Reading. He has worked with Negroes and was shocked by the stories he has heard about their treatment in the South at the hands of slave owners.

Mark Paschall, Union Veteran/Doctor from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Age: 33, Race: Caucasian

Dr. Paschall enlisted into the Union Army shortly after the way began. He witnessed the horrors of the battlefield firsthand and wants the war to come to a swift end. He contributed in columns in Abolitionist publications and has harbored runaway slaves on his property prior to enlisting.

Jonathan Billings, Union Officer from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Age: 36, Race: Caucasian

Lt. Billings is a career military man, as is his brother Peter, who sided with the Confederacy due to his belief in state sovereignty. Lt. Billings has served under Grant and is opposed to letting the South slide by without paying the price for seceding from the Union. His father served as a member of Congress and spoke out often against the state sovereignty beliefs of Stephen Douglas.

James Wilkes, Union Veteran/Store Clerk from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Age: 24, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Wilkes served for 2 years in the Union army before being sent home for hearing loss suffered while crossing enemy lines and passing through cannonfire. He feels that the North has the moral authority and responsibility to make sure that the South changes their current course of enslavement.

Jefferson Marshall, Union Veteran/Factory Worker from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Age: 22, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Marshall served in the Union Army for 3 years until he lost an eye and ear to Confederate gunfire. He now works in a factory in Allentown helping produce goods for the Union war effort. He harbors a deep resentment toward the South for the loss of his eye and ear feeling that they set the course of events of war into motion.

Benjamin Holt, Union Officer from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Age: 30, Race: Caucasian

Sgt. Holt has served with the Union Army since he was 18. He has a deep conviction in the sacredness of life but feels deeply that the Union must be preserved. His father and brother are also officers in the Union Army. He has just learned that his younger brother David was hung by a group of Confederate deserters. His family is in the process of arranging the funeral.

Barney Phillips, Union Veteran/Coal Worker from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Age: 38, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Phillips served for 1 year in the Union Army running supplies to the troops on the front lines. He was briefly captured by Confederate sympathizers and was tortured for several days before escaping. The experience left him without two of his fingers, which were broken and badly infected when he returned home.

Jeremy Mandata, Union Veteran/Boat Captain from Marysville, Pennsylvania, Age: 29, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Mandata ran supplies along the river routes in Pennsylvania to aid in the war effort. From his boat, he witnessed Union troops being beaten for trying to desert. He feels strongly in the belief of obeying orders no matter what the order is.

Robert Montgomery, Union Veteran/Factory Worker from Reading Pennsylvania, Age: 35, Race: Caucasian

Mr. Montgomery served for 2 years in the Union Army and lost both of his brothers to Confederate gunfire. The body of his oldest brother, Timothy, was never recovered. He has heard of the terrible treatment Union soldiers receive at the hands of Confederate captors.
